Again, this is woefully complete. I have fandoms where I've only read one fic so far and fandoms where I haven't gotten to anything yet. So I look forward to also having great stuff to discuss post-reveals.
Life/Time Opportunity. (The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson) A prospective listing written by a real estate agent trying, later, to sell Hill House, complete with opening and closing notes from her boss. Very funny (there's a bit involving a punctuation mark that keeps making me laugh) and very creepy, too.
The Space Garden. (The Secret Garden) A perfect, imaginative SF retelling of The Secret Garden, set in an Expanse-style future and full of clever updates/parallels and beautiful descriptions of an alien (well, genetically engineered for a particular non-Earth environment, anyway) coming to life.
Fiddler. (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist) A sweet, insightful, and beautifully written near-futurefic for Zoey/Max, with the same feel of emotional realism--despite all the singing and occasional madcap actions--as the show. A lovely established relationship and look at people being happy in a nuanced, textured way.
Best Keep Up. (Perry Mason) A smart post-S1 look at Perry/Hamilton, with some great Perry characterization, good chemistry, and some especially sharp lines.
Toward Grace. (Perry Mason) Spot-on and complex character study of Sister Alice--an amazing handling of her POV all told through some especially gorgeous prose.
Muscle Memory. (Iron Fist) Excellent, fun, achy look at Ward teaching Danny how to shoot Orson Randall's guns, complete with great characterization and them working hard to unlearn some trauma responses that they don't need anymore, at least not around each other.
The Strike of Eight. (Spirit - George Roux) Five minute fandom, no canon knowledge necessary. A dark and excellent ghost story, with slowly unfolding layers of horror; this feels like it could be a lost classic horror tale.
Where the Lovelight Gleams. (Malory Towers) Near-futurefic with Clarissa and Bil, pining, and a complication you may not expect. I hit the end of this and then immediately went back and read it again.
Thunder (Malory Towers) An uncanny, beautiful combination of cozy Blyton-style boarding school tropes with numinous, mythic Alan Garner-style fantasy, unifying two British children's lit styles into one glorious whole. Beautifully written, with wonderfully done Clarissa/Bill.
